Expect to give yourself a MUCH higher risk of skin cancer.

k, i have been using a tanning bed forever, and finally bought my own last yr. the first time you tan, you may not notice much. first time tanners really should not tan for more than 5 mintues (3 minutes if you r very fair). it depends on how fair your skin is and how new/hot the bulbs are. caution….do not tan for too long or u’ll get burned. tanning in a bed doesn’t show immediate results unless you stayed too long. usually your skin will react slowly over the course of the day or night depending on when u tan. hint: do not take a shower or bath w/in 30 minutes of tanning. it is good to shower and exfoliate before tanning. even to get a light tan you will have to tan at least once per week. once you get a base color, you can slack off on visits. make sure that you move around while tanning so that you do not get more tan on one side or the other. i tan w/out clothing. that is a personal choice. if you do accidently get too much then, hold off for 3-4 days before tanning again. if you see results the first time….then you probably stayed too long. plus, you may experience a lot of itching, especially on your chest, butt, and legs. this can be a normal reaction and does go away w/time, but it is miserable in the meantime. the more exposure you get, the less you will itch if you do at all. if you do itch just apply tons of moisturizer. you should notice only a gradual change, no burning. the most important thing to remember is that you should see a dermatologst at least once a year, to be checked. if you notice any changes in your skin or freckles or moles change in anyway…get to the dr. asap. i always see a dr. yearly to protect myself from skin cancer. the idea is not to over do it and be aware of ur skin and changes all the time. tanning beds do not equal skin cancer. heredity, constant over-exposure and carelessness are of more concern. always ask ur dr about any meds u might be on also, because many including antibiotics, will increase your chances of harmful burns. do not tan while u r sick and on medication for an infection of any kind. it is just too risky. otherwise, use common sense and you’ll have a nice, safe glow in no time.
